Richard Swinburne is one of the most distinguished philosophers of religion of our day. In this volume, many notable philosophers in Britain and america unite to honour him and to discuss various topics to which he has contributed significantly. These include general topics in the philosophy of religion such as revelation, and faith and reason, and the specifically Christian doctrines of the Trinity, the Incarnation, and atonement. In the spirit of the movement which Richard Swinburned has spearheaded, the essays in this collection use analytic philosophical methods to examine doctrines in particular religious traditions, expanding upon traditional discussions of theism. As such, this volume represents a field-report on the interaction of philosophy and Christian thought in the English-speaking world: a fitting tribute to the Nolloth Professor of the Philosophy of Christian Religion at the University of Oxford. Richard Swinburne has himself contributed and individual and personal Intellectural Autobiography. Contributors: William P. Alston, David Brown, Richard M. Gale, Rom Harré, Brian Hebblethwaite, John Hick, Peter van Inwagen, J. R. Lucas, David McNaughton, Philip L. Quinn, Eleonore Stump, William J. Wainwright, C. J. F. Williams

This Festschrift for Richard Swinburne brings vividly home the sea-change that philosophy of religion has undergone since the 1960s. * Brian Leftow, International Philosophical Review * In the limited space available it is impossible to give adequate expression to the interest aroused by, and the skill displayed in, the book of essays under review ... if any minister of religion is looking for something on which to sharpen his wits over the next twelve months, he could not do better than read Swinburne's corpus and reflect upon it, in the light of the essays to which I am referring ... he would have learnt what is meant by high class academic philosophical and theological discussion. * Expository Times * The collection is a handsome recognition of Richard Swinburne's achievement as a philosopher of religion. * Theology * In the limited space available it is impossible to give adequate expression to the interest aroused by, and the skill displayed in, the book of essays under review ... if any minister of religion is looking for something on which to sharpen his wits over the next twelve months, he could not do better than read Swinburne's corpus and reflect upon it. * The Expository Times * The collection is a handsome recognition of Richard Swinburne's achievement as a philosopher of religion. * Theology * His work has become the standard example of the kind of position which he defends, and will therefore be referred to and discussed by both critics and supporters for years to come. The high standard of the papers in this volume are a worthy tribute to a rigorous and eminent philosopher of religion like Richard Swinburne. * Journal of Theological Studies * The book concludes with a highly valuable bibliography of Swinburne's works, followed by an index - not always an automatic feature in an anthology ... Viewed altogether, the articles in this book give testimony to the lively debates of which Richard Swinburne has been a part and the positive role that Christian belief is enjoying in the philosophical world of our day. Their evident philosophical rigor demonstrates that Christian commitment and solid scholarship can go hand in hand, at least as long as philosophy does not usurp the place reserved for divine revelation. * Christian Scholar's Review *
