This book aims to determine the relation of Newman's idea of conscience to our ordinary idea of it. This needs to be done, the author argues, before any satisfactory appraisal of Newman's thought about conscience becomes possible. Newman's view of the relation between the authority of conscience and that of the church, the ascription of authority to conscience, and the matter of rights of conscience are major topics of discussion.
