Possidius, the bishop of Calama, was a life-long friend of St. Augustine's and best known for writing a biography of the bishop of Hippo, the Vita Augustini. Hermanowicz analyzes both the biography and the legally-oriented career of Possidius to illustrate how active Augustine's colleagues were in soliciting imperial support against their religious competitors and to show just how often Augustine's close friends disagreed with him on important matters of law, coercion and diplomacy. It is still widely asserted by scholars that St. Augustine dominated the theological landscape of North Africa, but this engaging study demonstrates how often he was, in fact, singular and isolated in his beliefs.

Erika Hermanowicz (Assistant Professor of Classics, University of Georgia)

This book is of great significance for Augustinian studies and the mould in qhich Augustine's works were recast from the fifth century onwards. * Allen Brent, Journal of Ecclesiastical History * clearly the result of years of solid research ... offers a thorough thematic introduction into the Vita Augustini and supplement the existing Donatism study with a meritorious overview of this controversy from the standpoint of Possidius. * A. Dupont, Ephemerides Theologicae Lovanienses * Frykenberg's amazing breadth of knowledge brings to life the complexity of India's Christian history ... I heartily recommend this book. * Timothy C. Tennent, Christianity Today * This is the best single-volume history of Christianity in India written so far. It is both genuinely Indo-centric and genuinely ecunemical. * John C. B. Webster, International Bulletin of Missionary Research * learned and intellectually demanding ... Hermanowicz has written a book which reminds church historians of the influence which legal thinking has exercised on Christian practice, particularly in the Latin West. * Gerald Bonner, Journal of Theological Studies *
