Before becoming the Assistant Bishop of Llandaff, David Wilbourne was vicar of Helmsley, a market town nestling on the southern slopes of the North York Moors. For twelve years he wrote a regular diary column in the Church Times, delighting its readers with his quirky tales of ministry in Helmsley. The Helmsley Chronicles collects the best of David's diaries, substantially edited and bolstered with new material. Gently celebrating rural and church life, it is a wonderful foil to all the uncertainties and insecurities of the modern world and church in a style both humorous and poignant that will delight readers of Yorkshire diarists such as James Herriot and Gervase Phinn.

David Wilbourne

David Wilbourne is a prolific writer and broadcaster who served as chaplain to both the Rt Rev Dr John Habgood and the Rt Rev Dr David Hope as Archbishops of York. He was vicar of Helmsley for twelve years before becoming Assistant Bishop of Llandaff in Wales.

David Wilbourne has the uncanny knack of turning his experiences of parish life into prose which is both arresting and entertaining and at times deeply moving, well laced too with a good deal of gentle satire! He wears his learning lightly as he seeks both to debunk and to inform using snippets from the past to bring life and colour to the present. -- David Hope, former Archbishop of York Funny and inspiring! -- John Sentamu, Archbishop of York
