What am I here for? How should I behave?

Most Christians, faced with those questions, think in terms either of ‘rules’ or of ‘living authentically’. Both lead to problems.

In this book, full of fresh biblical exploration, Tom Wright proposes instead that we inhabit the ancient tradition of virtue once again – but from a thoroughly Christian, not just a philosophical, perspective. The virtues are the strengths we need to get to our goal. Following on from his popular best-selling books Simply Christian and Surprised by Hope, he sees the goal in terms of the whole new creation, with humans renewed to look after it.

Tom Wright

Tom Wright is Research Professor Emeritus of New Testament and Early Christianity at the University of St Andrews and Senior Research Fellow at Wycliffe Hall, Oxford. He is the author of more than 80 influential books, including The New Testament for Everyone, Simply Christian, Surprised by Hope, The Day the Revolution Began, Paul: A biography, The New Testament in its World, On Earth as in Heaven and Into the Heart of Romans (all published by SPCK).

'In this book Bishop Wright uses telling, true-to-life illustrations which brilliantly make the point and will have a gripping effect on the reader. It is refreshing to read a book on holiness which in every way serves the present age.' - The Methodist Recorder'One of the great gifts of the Bishop of Durham, Tom Wright, is to combine a highly readable, even at times racy, style with deep biblical scholarship. Following fast after his best-sellers Simply Christian and Surprised by Hope . . . this book is a rich treat . . . deeply theological and intensely practical and pastoral.' - The Church Times
