This book is for all who feel called to a life of Christian ministry, and want to make sure their calling is firmly based on the teaching and model of Jesus, as provided in the four Gospels. Widely respected as an international expert in Gospel studies, Richard Burridge is also a brilliant communicator with many years of pastoral experience in selecting and training people for the priesthood. Here he offers a little book that is brim full of practical advice on how to develop and maintain all the key skills needed for ministry today. The core of the book is based on the portraits of Jesus in each of the four Gospels, and helps you consider vital questions such as: how to sustain Bible study, reading and theological reflection in ministry; how to extend pastoral care to people outside as well as inside the Christian community; how to look after yourself and your family; and how to stay attuned to the Spirit by cultivating a fresh and vigorous life of prayer.

Richard Burridge

Richard A. Burridge is Dean of King's College London, where he is also Professor of Biblical Interpretation. His book What are the Gospels? A Companion with Graeco-Roman Biography (second edition, Eerdmans, 2004) is widely regarded as a breakthrough in Gospel criticism. Other books include the critically acclaimed Imitating Jesus: An Inclusive Approach to New Testament Ethics (Eerdmans, 2007), shortlisted for the Michael Ramsey Prize, 2009. In 2013 he won the Ratzinger Prize for Theology, following publication of the SPCK Classic edition of his Four Gospels, One Jesus? (SPCK, 1994, 2013).

This is Richard Burridge at his best: combining practical wisdom, deep spirituality and inspiring scholarship. * Justin Welby, Archbishop of Canterbury * Presenting Jesus as the exemplar for ministry, this welcome book blends a scholar's attention to gospel texts with a priest's insight into ordained life. * Rosalind Brown, Canon Librarian, Durham Cathedral * A wise and rich resource for those exploring vocation, deeply rooted in the realities of ministry and in the depths of the biblical tradition. * Ian McIntosh, Ministry Division, The Archbishops' Council * One of the very best books on Jesus, the gospels and ministry today . . . packed with treasure and wisdom. * Martyn Percy, Dean of Christ Church, Oxford * What makes the book special is that it is grounded in four different "sources".... It is the integration of all these factors which makes the book so good . . . The key question on my mind while reading the book to review it was this: "Do I wish that I had read this before?" The answer was a definite "Yes." -- The Revd Dr Stephen Cherry * Church Times *
