The first section identifies the pressure from Modernism for some universal basis for morality, reviews post-Modernism's critique of Modernism and the consequent possibility of Christian ethics being accepted as just one amongst many traditions and voices, and ponders some of the factors that render Protestantism (in particular) ill-prepared to meet these challenges. The second section explores the bases for an authentically Christian ethic, while the third section considers the manner in which this ethic of character takes shape in the narrative of the Church. The final section reconsiders the manner in which Christian ethics, thus identified, might be both coherent and persuasive within contemporary society.
Part one Particularity and distinctiveness: morality and rationalism; morality and post-Modernism; morality and protestantism. Part two Gospel and law: the Gospel as story; the Gospel as mercy; the Gospel as command. Part three The dynamics of indwelling: the indwelling of the spirit; the indwelling of the story; indwelling and identity. Part four Universality and particularity: the priority of the future; the commonality of perception; persuasiveness and resonance.
"This is an excellent study that could do much to introduce the thinking of an important group of theologians who stress the distinctiveness of Christian Ethics to a wider audience Those like me who follow a more traditional Catholic and Anglican approach to ethics than the one outlined in this book will still find much to stimulate their thinking and deepen their understanding."
