Historical and philosophical methods have long been used by theologians, whereas social theory has been viewed with caution. This book provides an introduction for theological students interested in considering the relationship of the social sciences to theology, while providing a critical overview of the various ways in which the social sciences have been used in five areas of recent theological study. The author considers each of these areas in turn - biblical studies, systematic theology, Christian ethics, pastoral theology and liturgical studies. In each of these five areas he demonstrates the contribution that social science has already made and indicates directions for future research.
