Is Christianity intellectually defensible? Isn't secular morality enough? How could the special claims of Christianity be true in the face of the conflicting doctrines of other religions? Is there any solid basis for belief in life after death? If there is a God, what reasons are there for believing that Christianity is true, and so for being a Christian? In a straightforward, clearly organized manner, Hugo A. Meynell investigates these and other questions in order to determine the truth of the central doctrines of Christianity, as held by Eastern Orthodox, Roman Catholic, and Protestant Christians. His discussion of the value of Christianity and the intellectual and moral grounds on which it stands or falls will be of great interest to Christians who wish to evaluate the grounds of their faith, to ""seekers"" who want to know what reasons there are for thinking Christianity is true, and to the nonreligious and antireligious who wish to refute Christian doctrine and so must be familiar with defenses of it.

Meynell makes a persuasive case for the truth of central Christian doctrines--about God, the Trinity, the Incarnation, Atonement, Redemption, and life after death--and seeks to show that these are the fulfillment and consummation of the doctrines of the other great religions. Is Christianity True? will engage and enlighten both Christians and non-Christians, atheists and agnostics--in short, anyone interested in the question of how, if at all, a case can be made for traditional Christianity.

Hugo A. Meynell was born in Derbyshire, England, and attended King's College, Cambridge, where he studied music and theology and where he later received his Ph.D. in philosophy of religion. He is the author of ten books and numerous articles and is full professor in the department of religious studies at the University of Calgary.

""This is a brilliant and exciting book. Meynell illuminates every topic he touches. His chapters on other religions, on the Incarnation and Atonement, and on the problem of historical criticism are incisive and quite original; they contribute to discussions beyond the realm of apologetics. . . . [His] style is luminous. Each chapter is carefully structured around a clearly formulated set of issues and addresses these with brevity, deliberation, and rigor.""--J. A.
