What does it mean to be a eucharistic community? In Christ Now Meet Both East and West approaches the Eucharist from the perspective of Christianity being a religion of the table—a place where our thanksgiving happens by gathering as a people with Christ. Author Thomas O’Loughlin emphasizes that any renewal of ourselves as a eucharistic people involves discovering that we are then sent from that table to act, to be eucharistic in our communal activity. He explains that this task is not located in an awesome temple or an otherworldly place but in the heart of the everyday. Through this action of blessing, praising, thanking, and being eucharistic to our heavenly Father, we set about celebrating our faith eucharistically with the risen Jesus present among us.

Thomas O'Loughlin

Thomas O’Loughlin is professor emeritus of historical theology at the University of Nottingham, UK, the director of Studia Traditionis Theologiae, and the former president of the Catholic Theological Association of Great Britain. O’Loughlin is the author of Eating Together, Becoming One: Taking Up Pope Francis’s Call to Theologians, The Rites and Wrongs of Liturgy: Why Good Liturgy Matters, and Washing Feet: Imitating the Example of Jesus in the Liturgy Today, from Liturgical Press.

"In this book, Fr. O'Loughlin pulls the eucharist out of the tabernacles and off the library shelves. He respectfully places the Body of Christ right on our kitchen tables to be shared especially with those who are rejected and underserved. He urges the reader to remember the eucharist is not a static object of adoration but a timeless thanksgiving event where everyone has a place at the banquet table as a matter of justice. This nourishing meditation is a rejuvenating reminder that the people of God are the ones called to celebrate their own mystery of faith." Richard S. Vosko, author and liturgical designer "As usual Tom O'Loughlin gets right to the point. The Eucharist is a banquet in which we make thanksgiving to God by sharing one loaf and one cup. This book is a very accessible gem that should enable anyone with interest in the church's worship to gain a renewed and refreshing understanding of just what it is that we celebrate when we gather to celebrate the Lord's Supper." John F. Baldovin, SJ, Boston College School of Theology and Ministry "An insightful look at the Eucharist as the celebratory action that not only draws us together in thanksgiving, but also models for us how to go forth and live eucharistic lives in the ordinariness of everyday activities and moments."
