The American Catholic Bishops, in preparing a pastoral on the American economy, sought the assistance of the Notre Dame Center for Ethics and Religious Values in Business. This book represents the resulting 15 research papers by business/labor leaders and theologians and is focused on four themes: employment generation, income for the poor and disadvantaged, U.S. trade with the Third World, and the possibilities for cooperation and planning in the U.S. economy.
...makes a major contribution to Christian social ethics on economic issues.... This book contains working papers that the bishops used in preparing their pastoral letter on the economy. It is also useful as an interpretation of Part Two of that letter. This is a strategically important book. -- T.M. Hesburgh An eminently useful resource document...A significant contribution to the latest dialogue orchestrated by the American Bishops...A scholarly analysis of the issues that will dominate the Bishops' dialogue on the economy. -- Leo V. Ryan This volume presents the principal papers delivered at the symposium and provides an excellent overview of the diverse opinions and approaches to economic issues that have been considered by the bishops in the preparation of their pastoral letter.
