This book deals with the question: Is it possible to be Christian and modern without being schizophrenic or dishonest? This question is necessary because Christianity is the only major religion that has had to face the challenge of the Age of Reason-not because it wanted to, but because Christianity dominated the culture in which the Age of Reason arose. That challenge took the form of the rise of natural science which questioned the Biblical cosmology and Biblical scholarship and which challenged the historical sources to the books within the Bible itself. Mahan seeks to be honest both to the findings of Biblical scholarship and to the genius of Christianity at its best.
