Although not a denomination with a liturgical tradition, the Baptist Church does have a considerable number of service for which some set form of words is needed - holy communion, weddings and funerals, obviously, but also thanksgiving and dedication for a baby; adult baptism; receiving into church membership; the commissioning of deacons, elders, youth workers and other church officers; ordination of ministers; dedication of a new church building and many more such occasions.

It has been more than two decades since the last such service book was published and this draws on the liturgical renewal that has taken place in recent years to create texts that are both beautiful and versatile.

Baptist Union of Great Britain, Christopher Ellis, Myra Blyth

CHRISTOPHER ELLIS is Principal of Bristol Baptist College. MYRA BLYTH is a former President of the Baptist Union. She now teaches in Oxford.

"This is an important contribution to the formation of God's people in worship, which deserves to be read and used both within and outside the Baptist fold. It is a mine of resources, many of which will be welcomed by Anglicans for those occasions where 'other words may be used'". Peter Moger, National Worship Development Officer, Praxis News of Worship, Summer 2006.
