Stephen Wright offers a constructive introduction to preaching as an existing and varied practice throughout the church on which it is important to continue to reflect theologically, so that it is executed with developing spirituality, understanding and skill.

Alive to the Word includes discussion of the full range of key components in the understanding and practice of preaching - from its basic theological rationale right through to the dynamics of live communication and its aftermath.

The book begins by reflecting on the nature and the context of preaching, not least in a communications culture and moves on to setting a constructive agenda for the development of preaching as a core practice of the Christian church for the preacher, the congregation and the wider church.

Stephen Wright

Stephen Wright is an Anglican priest and former Director of the College of Preachers, who now teaches biblical studies and preaching at Spurgeon's College, London. His books include Preaching with Humanity (with Geoffrey Stevenson), Alive to the Word: A Practical Theology of Preaching for the Whole Church and Jesus the Storyteller.

This book is for anyone wanting to review their own preaching ministry; for anyone privileged to teach preaching to others. Stephen Wright explores preaching today in all its contexts - the Bible, of course, but also our contemporary communication culture, the life of the church, the life of the preacher. It isn't a 'how to' book, but it's packed with thoughtful observations which make me think about the way I preach; and make me want to do better. -- Paul Johns, Director of the College of Preachers
