Providing an accessible one-volume guide to Christian doctrine, this book offers a thoroughly re-written version of the SCM Core Text. Since the publication of the original, a significant shift in the teaching of doctrine in theological colleges and beyond, has been necessary to confront reality of the broader global context of the church, and recognise the role of one’s positionality in terms of race, socio-political outlook, gender, disability and so on. In this second edition, the author seeks to address these issues, refusing to position himself as an ‘authority’ and instead inviting students to understand doctrine as both contingent and complex. Fully updated for clarity and yet retaining its role as a rigorous introduction to its subject, the book includes new ‘interruptions’, which offer counter-voices and new directions for students to take in their studies.

Introduction 1. The Love of God James Cone on the Love of God 2. The Broken World A.M. Ranawana on Ecological Rage 3. God’s Life in the World Michael Wyschogrod on Judaism and Incarnation 4. The Way of the Cross Lorna May Wadsworth’s ‘A Last Supper’ 5. The Life-Giving Spirit Simon Chan on Foretastes of the End 6. The Church in the World Al Barrett and Ruth Harley on Being Interrupted 7. The Threefold Way Linn Marie Tonstad on the Trinity and Gender 8. From the Beginning Many Voices on the Environmental Crisis 9. Life in the Middle Karen Kilby on Meaningless Suffering 10. Mike Higton

Mike Higton is an Anglican theologian who teaches at Durham University, specialising in Christian doctrine. He is the author of several books, including The Life of Christian Doctrine, A Theology of Higher Education, and Difficult Gospel: The Theology of Rowan Williams.

"In this wonderful book, Mike invites us to explore Christian Doctrine, without ever imagining we can fully understand God and God's ways with us. The beauty and mysteries of the Christian faith are made accessible, as are perspectives often overlooked in such texts. In this book, Christian doctrine is brought into dialogue with some of our most urgent questions and concerns, proving the ongoing importance of theology for our human experience." Selina Stone
