A growing number of churches are now employing someone to work with children and young people.

This short and accessible guide helps churches through the whole process of researching, planning and making an appointment.

It helps churches to avoid common mistakes which can lead to later problems. It also considers how volunteers might be best used and supported.

The guide includes:

  • Preparation: research, planning, resourcing the work, thinking through what you want a worker to do.
  • Appointment procedures: job descriptions and contracts, the recruitment and selection process.
  • Management issues: good management practice, induction and further development.
  • Further sources of help and advice.

Paul Godfrey

Paul Godfrey was a leading thinker about, and practitioner of, evangelism for children and the development of their discipleship. He held the position of Children's Work Adviser for the Anglican Diocese of Chelmsford for six years. Paul previously worked as a children's evangelist and as a secondary school teacher. His passion that children should be high on the Church's agenda led him to stand for General Synod, and serve on it for five years. He was a member of the European Forum on Children's Evangelism, and was helping to plan the European consultation in 2010.

Sadly, Paul died suddenly in August 2007. He was a thinker and inspirer of others who held his love of children alongside his Christian faith. He was a role model for children's workers and influenced many in the Church of England and in wider national and European networks.

Nic Sheppard

Nic Sheppard was for 20 years the Youth Work Adviser and Team Leader of the Diocesan Children and Young People's Development Team for what was the Anglican Diocese of Ripon and Leeds. Nic and the Team advised parishes seeking to develop their youth and children's work. This included working with a wide variety of churches and local project Management Committees employing Youth, Children and a variety of other project workers. Nic is a Church Army officer with over thirty years experience of working with church and community projects presenting the Gospel in word and action.
